In spite of a decline in activity, gaming accounts for 45% of active wallets in the web3 industry

DappRadar reports that despite a 12.33% decrease in February, gaming-related Daily Unique Active Wallets (dUAW) account for 45.43% of the decentralized application (dApp) industry.

According to the DappRadar report, 752,735 dUAW were recorded on-chain at the end of February. Two games, Oak of Peak and Trickshot Blitz, saw their on-chain user counts increase despite the overall decrease. The game developer Unity also shows its bullish sentiment towards the industry by offering 13 blockchain-based software development kits (SDKs).

The blockchain gaming industry

As the report notes, the 12.33% decline recorded last month is consistent with previous years, because “February tends to be a slow month for the industry.”

While gaming still accounts for almost half of the industry activity, its dominance has been undermined by shrinking dUAW numbers.

The 45% in February represents a decrease from gaming’s 48% dominance in January. The current dominance rate reverses the January growth and returns dominance rates to December 2022 levels.

Regardless, gaming continues to completely dominate DeFi. In terms of gaming, DeFi increased its dominance rate to 24% from 21% in January. However, this still accounts for nearly half of gaming’s 45%.

Going against the flow

With the exception of WAX, all significant gaming blockchains showed a general decline in the number of dUAWs (WAXP). Wax boosted the number of its dUAWs to 342,764 in February, an increase of 3.26%.

All other major chains reported decreases in February, with HIVE (HIVE) reporting the largest decrease at 36%. Polygon (MATIC), BNB Chain (BNB), and EOS (EOS) were all reduced by 35%, 12%, and 3.44%, respectively.

Oath of Peak went against the grain and became the top-performing game in February, increasing its monthly UAW (mUAW) by 136% to 88,090. Trickshot Blitz was another game that grew in February, increasing its mUAW to 84,160, a 49% increase from the previous month. Finally, Farmers World managed to defy the overall decline in February by increasing its mUAW by 4%.

Bullish with SDKs

The report also mentioned a new trend in blockchain gaming: SDKs. According to the report, there will be an 87% increase in Ethereum (ETH) SDKs in 2022, citing Alchemy’s Q4 data. Furthermore, installs increased by 16% in the fourth quarter compared to the third quarter of the same year.

Recognizing the new trend, the game development platform Unity entered the market with 13 blockchain gaming SDKs. Unity introduced a “decentralization” category in its online store, listing these SDKs, which include major protocols such as Immutable X (IMX), Solana (SOL), and MetaMask.
